I’ve been following Fence graphic novels for a while now and when I got the chance to read and review this novel, I jumped at the chance (with a lot of enthusiasm and screaming, may I add).īefore I go into more depth about certain parts of the novel, here are my general thoughts: Fence: Striking Distance is a fun and quick read, filled with witty one-liners, angst, friendships, and relationship drama! It was pretty heavy on that last bit, but I can’t say I really minded that even if it was slightly unexpected.įence: Striking Distance reads like a cute LGBTQ+ contemporary and here’s my only complaint: where is the sports component? As the name implies, our main protagonists are brought together due to being team members in Kings Row fencing team, but we don’t see a lot of fencing being done. ![]() Pacat (author) and Johanna the Mad (illustrator)! All in all, it's an above average 50s horror film, in my (reasonably) humble opinion. Anyway, the movie's beautifully shot, the story plays out nicely, and the whole thing builds up a satisfying level of tension as it moves along toward its climax. Nothing supernatural or monster-y going on with that plot, but you gotta admit "wax-coated corpses" is a pretty creepy premise all by itself. The plot's basically about "a disfigured sculptor who repopulates his destroyed wax museum by murdering people and using their wax-coated corpses as displays." (So says Wikipedia so say we all.) Vincent Price, for one thing, and backed by a solid cast. Of course I'm familiar with the film, having read about it and caught bits on TV over the years, but sitting down to it this week has me quite sure I'd never seen it beginning to end.Īt any rate, the movie's got a lot going for it. (How did that happen, you ask?) Well, it happened because I've never sought it out, being more of a creature feature guy and none too keen on movie psychopaths in general. Certainly more creepy than the uninspiring movie poster here would have you believe.Īnd you know what else? It's one I've never watched all the way through until this very week. So I watched this one first, and guess what? It's a seriously creepy little film. ![]() ![]() The first major non-fiction novel, In Cold Blood, may be dealing with gory quadruple murder, but, in terms of sheer horror, it has nothing on Richard Preston’s The Hot Zone, his 1994 account of the first emergence on US soil of one of the deadliest viruses known to men: Ebola.
